Almost all bacteria are so tiny they can only be seen through a microscope. Bacteria are made up of one cell, so they are a kind of unicellular organism

The glomerular basement membrane (GBM) of the kidney is the basal lamina layer of the glomerulus. The glomerular capillary endothelial cells, the GBM and the filtration slits between the podocytes perform the filtration function of the glomerulus, separating the blood in the capillaries from the filtrate that forms in Bowman's capsule. The GBM is a fusion of the endothelial cell and podocyte basal laminas.
A small colony of bacteria was found proliferating on the surface of a newly developed bio-polymer. While the presence of bacteria was unintentional, the bacterial growth provides evidence for the bio-compatibility properties of the polymer.

The image shows an array of freestanding Pt nanorods on silicon fabricated by electron beam induced deposition from the gas phase. The individual rods reveal a base diameter of about 80 nm and a hight of 1 µm. The wavy appearance was actually an artifact but too nice to be ignored. Image was post-colorized by Margit Wallner (FELMI).

Sub-micrometer grains of a Ti-rich sulfide phase were discovered in the Yamato 691 meteorite. The FIB was used at NASA-JSC Labs. to extract a thin x-section of the grains. Subsequent TEM analyses verified the composition and crystal structure of the phase and and a new mineral was discovered. In the picrure, the sub-micron grain of the new mineral is shown in yellow color.

The preparation of 100 nm thin cryo sections in the FIB-SEM. Due to the flexibility of the ice sheets, support is required to stabilize the structure during milling. Hence this construction is chosen, which resembles a medieval city wall.

The black plague is caused by the pathogen, Yersinia pestis. It only takes one Yersinia bacterium to cause an infection, which is deadly if not treated promptly. Immune cells (macrophages - purple/teal) were infected with Yersinia pestis (bright green), fixed, critically point dried, sputter coated with platinum, and imaged.
